Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research (Tamil Nadu) earlier known as Bharath University, commonly referred to as BIHER, commenced its establishment in the academic year of 1984. Bharath University has been given the status of ‘Deemed to be University'. The institute is approved and recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) respectively. It has also been accredited with grade ‘A' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
The main aim of establishing the institute was to provide high quality education to students from across the world in several relevant fields. The institute was developed to become a premier university for Teaching, Learning, Research, and Innovation. Students here are trained to create a better society with ethics and morals.
Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research has been ranked 21st among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The institute has also been awarded the “Best private university of the year” by World Education Congress.
The infrastructure of the university is segmented in four campuses, three in Chennai and one in Puducherry. The main campus of the university if Bharath Institute of Science & Technology (Chennai), and the other colleges are Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital (Chennai), Sri Lakshmi Narayan Institute of Medical Sciences (Puducherry), and Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital (Chennai). The infrastructure of the institute is spread over an area of 305 acres and all the basic and essential amenities are provided inside of the campus. The basic facilities include Central Library, Smart Classrooms, System Labs, Robotics Labs, Bosch Training Center, Research Park, Central Library, etc.

For admission to the undergraduate programs, the candidates must have passed senior secondary school securing at least 50% marks in aggregate from a recognized board.

Candidates seeking admission to the post graduate program must possess a bachelor's degree in the relevant field securing at least 50% marks in aggregate from a recognized university.

For admission to the PhD and M. Phil programs, the candidates must possess a master's degree in the relevant field securing at least 50% marks in aggregate from a recognized university.

Candidates seeking admission are shortlisted based on the merit in the last qualifying examination. For some courses, the candidates are shortlisted based on the marks obtained by them in Bharath Engineering Entrance Examination (BEEE) or NATA examination.
